Are Fidget Spinners Dangerous?

Sometimes, the hottest children’s toys of the summer double as dangers that can compromise a child’s safety. Previously, it was hoverboards that took the spotlight as one of the summer season’s most dangerous toys, after half a million hoverboards were recalled due to fires, explosions and injuries.

Now, it appears that fidget spinners are the dangerous toys of the season, causing concerned parents and doctors alike to warn of the dangers.

What Are Fidget Spinners?

Fidget spinners are a popular new toy being marketed as an antidote for children with hyperactivity disorder, autism or anxiety. Essentially, the toy is a small ball-bearing device that the child can rotate between their fingers to produce a satisfactory spinning motion.

These small devices have taken the world by storm, resulting in tens of millions in product sales. Unfortunately, however, these wildly popular toys are surprisingly dangerous, landing the fidget spinner on lists citing the most dangerous toys for kids.

What Makes Fidget Spinners Dangerous?

Fidget spinners can be made of either metal or plastic, but it seems that both design methods can be equally shoddy. Many cheap fidget spinners are falling apart after short periods of use, making the small pieces a choking hazard for children.

American children have been hospitalized after swallowing a piece of the fidget spinner, and one mother said her child nearly lost her life as a result. For this reason, the smaller fidget spinners are particularly dangerous for young children.

Schools across the country are responding to this safety issue, as schools and individual teachers in Florida and several other states are banning these toys from the classroom. If you have small children, it is in your best interests to be aware of these risks to decide whether fidget spinners are an age-appropriate toy.

If your child or a loved one has choked on a fidget spinner part or has been injured by these toys in any other way, you may be entitled to legal compensation. Florida product liability law adheres to a strict product liability standard for products that are in a condition that is unreasonably dangerous.
